In Cividale del Friuli, covered by a blanket of
ivy, the walls of a castle dating back to the first
half of the nineteenth century host the LOCANDA
AL CASTELLO.
This ancient monastery, which has been converted
into a hotel, lies on the slopes of a hill that
overlooks the historical centre of Cividale and
is in one of its most exclusive areas.
Built by a congregation of Jesuits, it was the summer
mansion for the religious to rest, meditate and
spend their holidays, dedicating themselves to philosophical
studies and research, surrounded by a natural environment
with a panorama of great beauty.
The structure of the building still witnesses an
unconscious bind with the Holy City; in fact, it
was Monsignor Costantini from Cividale, who, fascinated
by an imposing mansion he visited in Bethlehemduringone
of his pilgrimages, decided on the current architecture
of the castle, which, at the time, was given the
name of "Villa Betlemme" (Bethlehem Villa).
The diary of the meeting between the Jesuit fathers
on 15 October 1924, quotes: "in view of the
possibility of selling Villa Betlemme in Cividale,
which was inherited from Mons. Costantini [
]
the occasion to sell it with a benefit is not to
be missed". And so it was, and for many decades,
the property passed from one local family to another.
In 1960, considering its prestigious past and the
privileged position overlooking Cividale, the building
was restructured and intended for use as an inn,
also providing meals, therefore confirming its original
hosting vocation throughout the years.
The Balloch Family, who are the current owners of
the castle, have turned the old inn into a charming
and extremely comfortable hotel with a welcoming
and greatly appreciated restaurant.
The hotel still maintains the name of LOCANDA AL
CASTELLO. |
